Music as Poetry

I have always considered music to be a form of poetry. It is very similar in that it has verses or stanzas. Most music rhymes which is not always true of poetry, but poetry can rhyme if it wants to. Some artists can pervade the boundaries of music and poetry. One example of this is Jewel. She has written a book of poetry called "A Night Without Armor." It has some very beautiful poetry in it. There are a lot of underlying emotions within the poems which is intriguing to me. I would definitely recommend that you pick up a copy. It's definitely worth your while.

Some music I have found to be very poetic which means that its focus seems to be on the lyrics. There are a lot of artists out there who do this. One artist, in particular, who I would like to spotlight is Broken Bells. Broken Bells is a band that consists of James Mercer, who is the lead singer and guitarist of the Shins and Brian Burton a.k.a. Danger Mouse. Their self-titled album that came out in March is one of those albums with lyrics that are difficult to decifer, hence poetic.


I also think that The Killers (my favorite band of all time) has poetry in their lyrics. I have always loved the songs that have come out on their albums. Sometimes they tell a story and sometimes they are just good to listen to. I always relate in some way to their music. That's why I love them.  I think that my favorite album of there's is "Hot Fuss." It has a lot of really good songs that can be played over and over on anyone's stereo. It's also something that can be played on a long commute (I would know). I love listening to different albums on my way to work. It makes the drive more interesting.
